Delicious Freshly baked apple crumble

Our last holiday we went far down to Port Alfred in Eastern Cape, SA. We have never been there. And it look natural and peaceful. We were not disappointed. The beauty of this place is unbelievable!! If you ever need to escape from everything. This is the place to go!! December weather here in South Africa is usually hot. But I don’t know what happen….

We had probably 4 days of sunny hot weather, the rest of the days spent at the coast was cold and rainy. Normally this will be a problem. But being in such a small town we got to spent some time with some of the locals and farmers there. They were in extreme drought.

Even the wells have dried up. Some parts of the town don’t even get water through their taps anymore. They have to wait for a water tanker to come past their houses to get some water.
Listening to their stories made us realize how privilege we are. All I can say is THANK YOU!

So anyway, Back to the weather….

We spent most of our days driving and exploring (In the rain). And apparently here, Apple Crumble is a big thing. Every little bakery and every little corner cafe will have some sort of apple crumble available. Man-OH-man did we taste plenty. I then met a little old lady, one of the locals who shared her apple crumble recipe. This is definitely the best that I have ever tasted and just had to share it!!!

You simply just have to try this!

It makes 1 large, delicious apple crumble.

Apple Crumble ready to be enjoyed!

Apple Crumble

Ingredients

5 – 6 Sweet red apples
Zest of 1 grated Orange
Zest of 1 grated Lemon
2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed Orange juice
2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice
½ cup white sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

FOR THE CRUMBLE TOPPING:

1 ½ cup cake flour
¾ cup white sugar
¾ cup light brown sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup oatmeal
1 cup of cold butter, diced into blocks

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 180˚C and grease an ovenproof pie dish. I used a 23cm deep pie dish.

Start by peel and coring the apples. Cut them into large blocks. Now add the Zest and juices of the lemon & Orange, sugar and spices to the cut apples. Stir to combine the ingredients. Add them into your prepared pie dish.

To make the topping start by mixing all the topping ingredients together. Mix until it resembles crumbs. The butter should be broken up into small pea size bits.

Now add the crumbles on top of the prepared apples. Scatter them evenly covering all the apples.

Bake your apple crumble for 1 hour or until the top of the crumble is brown and the apples are bubbling.

Serve the crumble hot and add some fresh whipped cream or ice cream.

Enjoy!
