Homemade Dinner Rolls

These are by far the best homemade dinner rolls that I have ever made. They are easy to make, soft and fluffy. They almost have a bit of a sweet yet salty taste.

These buns are great to freeze and bake when you want some freshly baked buns. After placing your dinner rolls onto your prepared baking sheet instead of letting them rise, place them in the freezer for 2 hours. After they have been frozen, wrap each bun tightly and individually with cling wrap and aluminum foil. Place them back into the freezer. Freeze for up to 3 months. When you are ready to bake them, simply unwrap and place them onto a greased baking tray. Allow the rolls to defrost and rise fully then bake as per instructions.

Homemade Dinner Rolls

Makes around 12 Dinner rolls

Ingredients

½ cup Luke warm water
¼ cup sugar, granular
1 packet of Active dry yeast
90 ml Butter, melted and cooled
1 egg, room temperature
7.5 ml Salt
4 Cups all purpose flour

Topping:
2 Tablespoons melted butter
Coarse sea salt (Enough for sprinkling)

Directions

In a mixing bowl, mix together the Luke warm water, sugar and yeast. Stir to combine and cover the mixture. Allow the yeast to sit for at lease 5 – 10 minutes or until it becomes foamy.

Using a microwave or stove top, heat the milk up until just warm. Once hot, add in the melted butter. Set aside to cool.

Using a stand mixer, Mix the foamy yeast into the milk & butter mixture. Now add the egg and mix well. Use the Bread hook attachment to mix in 3 cups of flour and salt. If the dough is too sticky add the last cup of flour until a soft and slightly sticky dough forms.

Lightly oil a large mixing bowl. Place the dough into the oiled bowl and over with a piece of oiled cling wrap. Cover with a clean cloth and place in a warm area for at least an hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.

With floured hands, form 12 equally sized dough balls. Please them on a greased baking tray and cover again with a piece of greased cling wrap and cloth. Allow the dough to rise for another half an hour or until they have risen half way.

Toward the end of your rising time switch on your oven to 180˚C. Once ready place your buns in the oven and bake for around 20-25 minutes. They are done baking if the sound hollow when you tap on them using a wooden spoon and have a golden brown glow to them.
Take the buns out of the oven and immediately brush with the melted butter.
Sprinkle with coarse sea salt.

Enjoy!!

These buns are best served warm, but are just as good the next day!
